Waiting for May is an extremely well written look at the process of international adoption, from the point of view of a young boy who is getting a baby sister from China.

I bought the book for my 4-year-old son, because we're in the process of adopting a child from Kazakhstan.

Despite the difference in countries, so much of the process is the same/5(12). Waiting for May book. Read 6 reviews from the world's largest community for readers.

In this beautifully rendered tale, a young boy eagerly anticipates t /5. The Waiting is a non-fiction book that reads like a fictional novel--but it's even more powerful, because it's completely true.

The story chronicles the life of Minka DeYoung Disbrow who grew up on the plains of South Dakota, a Waiting for May book and innocent farm girl who, at the age of sixteen, was accosted by a stranger at a picnic/5(). Waiting for May is a picturebook with chapters, and I feel it also falls into the category of contemporary realistic fiction.

It is written for Primary and Intermediate readers. The main character in the book is an old man named Alec who lives on a old, decaying houseboat/5.

The story describes, month by month, the boy's participation in the long adoption process. Finally the waiting for May is over—she meets her new family, and it is the boy who makes her smile.

The child narrator's point of view distinguishes this book from others on this topic and makes it immediate and accessible.

Get this from a library. Waiting for May. [Thyrza Davey] -- A social worker wants Old Alec, who lives with his dog on a houseboat on the coast of Queensland, to move to a pensioners' home; but to escape such a fate, the old man decides to sail his broken-down. Ha Jin's novel Waiting was the winner of the winner of the National Book Award for Fiction. This quietly poignant novel of love and repression in Communist China begins in when Lin Kong, an army doctor, falls in love with the young nurse Manna Wu during a forced military march.

Waiting is a big part of childhood—waiting in line, waiting to grow up, waiting for something special to happen—but in this book, a child sets the stage and pulls the strings. Timeless, beautiful, and deeply heartfelt, this picture book about imaginative play, the seasons, friendship, and surprises marks a new pinnacle in Caldecott Medalist Brand: HarperCollins Publishers.
